Yana demonstrated a higher level of nursing care, extreme kindness and compassion towards a patient on our floor. The patient came to this unit with multiple injuries and fractures including multiple pelvic, rib and wrists fractures. This patient did not speak any English, but Cantonese only. Yana is from China and when asked if she spoke Cantonese, she replied "no I do not, but I could probably learn it". Yana is fluent in Mandarin, but was able to converse with the patient as the patient could understand some Mandarin and Yana was able to speak some Cantonese. She saw that the patient was agitated at times and was not able to converse with other staff other than with the language line, which at times could be difficult to use. The patient also had little family that visited and no other forms of entertainment or communication. Yana brought in her iPod which she changed the settings to speak Cantonese and left it with the patient for multiple days so the patient could listen to Cantonese music and radio. Yana offered to take this patient every day she was working and always with a smile, even though the patient was one of the heaviest acuity on the floor. As soon as this nurse walks into the patients' room at the beginning of her shift the patient instantly gets a smile on her face and is incredibly happy. Yana went above and beyond for this patient, thank you.
