Yasmin Aparicio was assigned to a young patient last week, who was Spanish-speaking only. The patient had end-stage metastatic cancer, which got worse with the diagnosis of Covid this admission. It was the weekend and both oncology and primary doctors wanted to have a plan of care discussion with the patient and her family. I felt this process required a more compassionate touch, so I reached out to Yasmin. Yasmin did an outstanding job translating back and forth. She used her clinical expertise. She was very professional, maintaining mutual respect even when one family member got a bit aggressive. Yasmin was able to convince both the patient and her family at the end to come to a mutual agreement which was hard but beneficial for the patient. The patient was able to make critical decisions for herself from that point onward.
