At one point, doctors were considering discharging me, but Yasemin recognized that something still wasn't right and supported making sure my concerns were taken seriously.
I would like to nominate Yasemin for a DAISY Award because of the incredible care, strength, and advocacy she showed during one of the most difficult nights of my hospital stay. When I first met Yasemin, she had a very direct and energetic personality, and I wasn't sure how we would connect, since her style was different from that of other nurses I had encountered. But very quickly, we clicked. What I realized is that Yasemin is the kind of nurse who is completely on top of everything. She was constantly anticipating my needs before I even realized I needed something. I never once felt like a burden asking her for help. She was attentive, responsive, and incredibly supportive.
The night she cared for me was also the most painful night of my stay. I was struggling a lot physically and emotionally, and Yasemin became my strength in that moment. When I felt like I couldn't get through the pain, she was there helping me push through it with reassurance, support, and action. She also strongly advocated for me regarding my care. At one point, doctors were considering discharging me, but Yasemin recognized that something still wasn't right and supported making sure my concerns were taken seriously.
The following day, my lab levels, including bilirubin, AST, and ALT, had significantly increased, confirming that there were still serious medical issues going on. Knowing that she had spoken up and supported my care made me feel protected and heard as a patient. During the night, we also had a personal conversation and realized that we were both veterans and immigrants who moved to the United States when we were 5 years old. Talking about our struggles and successes created an unexpected connection and made me feel like I had someone truly on my side in that moment, almost like having a "battle buddy" there with me during a difficult situation.
What meant even more to me was that the next day, when she was working on a different unit, Yasemin still took the time to come by and say hello and check on me. That gesture showed that her care for patients goes beyond the shift or the assignment. Yasemin's strength, attentiveness, and advocacy made an enormous impact on my experience during a very painful and vulnerable time. She truly embodies what it means to be a nurse who stands beside her patients when they need it most, and she is very deserving of a DAISY Award.
