My uncle was admitted to the Neuro ICU with a hemorrhagic stroke. My aunt, his wife of over 50 years, was comforted by Yeni, his nurse who helped explain what happened, showed her his CT images, explained the team's plan, and informed her of what medications he was receiving—since she knew that that's what I would be interested in as a clinical pharmacist. My aunt was still in shock of the situation and understandably exhausted. She wasn't sure whether she should leave his side to rest, but Yeni encouraged her to take care of herself, and that he was being well taken care of. This allowed her to leave the hospital for short moments. Yeni also helped care for him during his final moments. We played some of his favorite music, shared our favorite memories, and were able to spend time with each other celebrating his life in between waves of grief. She was reassuring, allowed us to take our time to come to a decision, kept my uncle comfortable, periodically checked in on us, and informed us throughout the process. Yeni is an excellent RN who made a very stressful, sad situation more bearable. She took great care of my uncle and the rest of my family—managed his pain/uneasiness, secretions, and our fear, anxiety, and stress. His last moments, and our last moments with him, were comforted by her care.
