The next day when Yesenia was not even assigned to my dad, she came and checked on him.
My 91-year-old father was in the hospital for 21 days. He was treated for septic arthritis infection/inflammation and was not an easy patient as his pain was unbearable after his surgery and it took a while for the Doctors to figure out the right pain medications for my dad. He was in a new environment where prior to coming to the hospital he was independent in everything by himself and now he needed to rely on his basic needs with nurses/CNA help and at times language was a barrier.

While all the nurses in 2C were amazing and great, there was one that stood out and that was Yesenia. She started to work with my dad when she first got assigned to his room. Immediately there was a sense of calmness that helped my dad be at ease with her in the room. Prior to her caring for our father he was not eating well and after she explained calmly to him on why he needed all the strength and nutrients to get better, we saw an uptake in his willingness to have portions of his meals. I felt that she took care of him like her own grandfather and answered all his questions and concerns with loads of patience, even though my dad would forget things that were explained to him daily.

There were times when dad did not know how to use the call button in his room and I noticed after explaining it to him, Yesenia would periodically in her busy shift still come and ask him if he needed anything. She was assigned to my dad again and she took excellent care of him and even asked me to not worry and go home and rest as he was in good hands. The next day when she was not even assigned to my dad, she came and checked on him when his assigned nurses were busy and you could see the smile on my dad’s face when she would walk in. It was on that day when we had the biggest “Aha” moment for us. Yesenia pointed out how she had taken care of lots of patients with surgeries before, and none had spasms like my dad. She asked if we checked for inflammation, which prompted me to ask the hospitalist to get a Rheumatoid Doctor involved; it was a good observation on her part which did lead to a final conclusion that my dad did not have an infection, but a bad case of inflammation in his knee and shoulder.

Yesenia went above and beyond her assigned duty to take care of my dad and we really appreciate the dedication, care, and comfort she gave to my dad while he was in the hospital and for that, we just wanted to recognize all her efforts. She is a Gem in 2C. She is definitely a Keeper, so please don’t lose her.
