Yesika Mederos Jiménez arrived in the United States three years ago without speaking English, leaving behind a six-year medical career in Cuba to start over. While working full-time, she learned a new language, adapted to a new culture, and enrolled in nursing school—all with a smile, optimism, and unwavering determination. Throughout our nursing program, she has consistently demonstrated compassion, dedication, and a genuine commitment to patient-centered care.

One moment that stands out occurred during our Fundamentals clinical rotation with older adult patients. I watched her sit beside an elderly patient who was anxious and confused. Rather than rushing through her tasks, she spoke calmly, listened attentively, held the patient’s hand, and explained everything she was doing. The patient visibly relaxed—a testament to the kindness and reassurance only Yesika could provide.

Yesika understands that nursing is not only about clinical skills but about human connection. She treats every patient with dignity, making them feel heard, valued, and cared for, and she lifts up her classmates with the same generous spirit.

Her story reflects courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to caring for others. For these reasons, Yesika Mederos Jiménez is highly deserving of the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Yesika, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
