Yohanna went the extra mile to deliver this 19-week-old, severely malformed fetus with compassion, empathy, and the gentlest touch.
I would like to nominate Yohanna Noa, RN for this prestigious award due to her care of a laboring mother who grieved the loss of her baby. This was a very physically and emotionally taxing birth for this novice nurse due to the nature of this case. Yohanna went the extra mile to deliver this 19-week-old, severely malformed fetus with compassion, empathy, and the gentlest touch. The patient's family (as well as our nursing staff) would like for Yohanna to be recognized as a DAISY Nurse for her extraordinary care of this fetal demise. Yohanna delivered the fetus near the beginning of her evening shift. She took the utmost care in cleaning and wrapping the fetus for the mother to hold in her arms to say one last goodbye. Yohanna knew how much these parents adored and yearned for this child and that time was of the essence to create memories for them. She was determined to collect as many keepsakes as possible for the family to take home, including the fetal footprints. The footprints were particularly difficult to obtain due to the condition of the under-developed fetal skin. Yohanna (with the help of her team leader) was able to transfer a beautiful set of footprints for the family to have for their memory box. The mother was so grateful for Yohanna, who very selflessly stayed by her side the entire night while she held her child, one she could not bear to see due to the graphic nature of the body. Thoughtfully, Yohanna had made sure to wrap her baby in a manner that would spare her the heartbreaking sight of the underdeveloped, hidrops fetus. Yohanna's unwavering commitment to her patients makes her a true DAISY Nurse. She undoubtedly played a critical role in delivering respectful maternal care and preserving important moments for the family. She is invaluable to our unit, as she is always offering a helping hand with a smile. She serves as an inspiration to other nurses in our unit. Her exceptional performance has undoubtedly made an impact on the lives of many parents, much like the ones in this story. Her ability to remain composed and focused during this challenging case deserves commendation.
