I think of her as effusive and all smiles, but then it occurs to me I never once saw her without a mask.
While my care here overall has been great, this lovely woman rang in above and beyond what I would say constitutes excellent care. I’m not sure I can pinpoint what that extra something special is - particularly when it just seems innate to who she is, but it leaves one feeling heard and genuinely cared about. She’s an excellent nurse and serves the profession well but she is full of empathy and easily shares a generosity of spirit that really put this patient at ease. I think of her as effusive and all smiles, but then it occurs to me I never once saw her without a mask. That’s a testament to how these traits in her penetrated with ease the mask that too often robs us of the subtleties of expression and communication. She was quick to reach out and grab my hand for a reassuring squeeze and her willingness to keep holding my hand only reaffirmed the sincerity of the gestures. The night before my discharge she was the charge nurse. There was a problem with dinner and I never got dinner. I was overly hungry, and in pain, and this had me scrambling to figure out how to get discharged immediately and get home. Yssa came in and “talked me down.” She listened, she problem solved, she made me feel cared for, and most importantly, she managed to take me from a situation that had escalated to me feeling panicked and abandoned to feeling safe. She met all the necessary goals in terms of being a top-notch nurse. She handled things in the most professional manner that I would assume falls to the charge nurse, but she maintained her humanity and empathy throughout. Where it would have been easy to further escalate an already high emotional situation, a little kind patience, and understanding brought a happy ending to my night - something I am incredibly grateful for!! Thank you Yssa!
