Today was one of the scariest days of my life, and the story below will explain why. I want to recognize RN Yuli Cruz for literally saving my life today. I have been a social worker for the past 11 years at Baptist Hospital, and have worked my entire life career in 2 Tower, where we are like family. I am currently 3 months pregnant, my first child, and I am overly excited about this new chapter in my life. While pregnant, you experience an immense hunger, that all you can think about is food, what to eat, when, and where. As I arrived to work this morning, I immediately proceeded to the cafeteria to get breakfast. As I walked to the 2 Tower lounge, I came across RNs Yuli and another nurse, who were also heading to the cafeteria, we greeted each other. I sat in the lounge, and to my amazement, there was no one else there. I began to eat like there was no tomorrow, and soon you will know this was a mistake. My breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, sausage, and a biscuit. While I gobbled the biscuit, I felt a piece of it may have gone down the wrong path in my throat. I began to cough, to try to cough it out, but instead, it then got stuck in my throat, and at this point, I was unable to cough or breathe. I ran out to the hallway, choking, unable to breathe, all these emotions going through my head at that time. I felt I was turning red. But then, there she was, Yuli, my angel at that time. She was returning from the cafeteria with her breakfast to sit in the lounge. She immediately saw that I was choking, without hesitation, gave her breakfast to the other nurse, got behind me, and started performing the Heimlich maneuver. I am 5'7" tall and Yuli is only 4'11". But I can tell you, she definitely gave all her might to try to get me to breathe again. After the second push, I was able to release and breathe. Of course, I began crying and became very anxious. They, along with other colleagues around at that time, sat me in the lounge and comforted me while I calmed down. I want to thank Yuli for saving my life. I do not know what I would have done without her at that time. Because of her quick thinking and excellent nursing skills, she was able to give me the chance to continue my journey of becoming a mother. Thank you Yuli, you will forever have a special place in my heart, a true angel, disguised as a Nurse.
