On her own Yvonne found books on Amazon in which the patient could record her voice reading to her daughters. She purchased three books so each daughter could have her own. It was a very tearful day for both Yvonne and the patient when she gifted these books to her.
Yvonne transferred to the Parnassus Infusion Center after working for several years on 11/12 long. On 11/12 Long Yvonne served as the unit educator as well as their pressure ulcer super user. Once Yvonne was oriented to outpatient and infusion services, she quickly found ways to be a resource on our unit. Not only is Yvonne an amazing infusion nurse she is also our weekend nurse coordinator and one of our resource nurses. I would like to take this opportunity to provide a few examples that demonstrate Yvonne’s dedication to our patients, but also our coworkers.
In 2020, the UCSF Hematology, Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy program (HBC) began treatment for a young mom of three. Her path through treatment was never easy, her type of leukemia required a Bone marrow transplant, unfortunately, she relapsed just four short months after transplant. She was coming to infusion on a regular basis up to three times a week. She frequently came in unstable requiring a transfer to the UCSF emergency room.
Yvonne always offered to care for this patient and being one of our primary weekend nurses often took care of her on weekends with limited staffing and resources. On her own Yvonne found books on Amazon in which the patient could record her voice reading to her daughters. She purchased three books so each daughter could have her own. It was a very tearful day for both Yvonne and the patient when she gifted these books to her. This is a small part that her daughters will have forever. After the patient passed, several nurses wanted to do something for her three daughters. Yvonne organized a collection for a small donation which was presented to the family. Yvonne’s interactions with this family are excellent examples of UCSF's Mission Statement, especially in caring and healing.
In addition to being an amazing nurse, Yvonne is an excellent co-worker. Yvonne is one of those people who remembers the little things. She will always ask how the staff's families and children are. She takes time to remember people’s birthdays and will do a little something special for them in the form of a few flowers or a cute little charm. Over the past few years, Yvonne has also taken the time to recognize special moments in people’s lives. With COVID it has been difficult the past few years to celebrate Bridal showers and baby showers and retirements like we use to.
With management's help, Yvonne ensured that these special moments would not go unrecognized. She has set up several small events in our unit conference room to make sure these life milestones were celebrated. She would bring in cupcakes and small decorations. She would take on the burden of collecting money for gifts, something most people didn't want to deal with. These small things and little touches are the true sign of Pride it is these small things that Yvonne takes the time to do that make UCSF Parnassus Infusion the best place to work.
Yvonne isn't just the unit organizer and recognizer; she also works hard as the Weekend Infusion charge nurse and weekend coordinator. Since staff is limited on weekends everything must run smoothly with minimal roadblocks. As weekend coordinator it is Yvonne’s job to prepare for the weekend during the week. She works endlessly to review all the weekend charts to ensure labs are ordered, orders are signed, appointments are made and staffing is sufficient to cover. This role can often be frustrating as it requires constant reaching out to providers for order clarifications as well as gathering information on how to properly care for patients coming in over the weekend. Yvonne doesn't just review their medications, she also reviews the patient’s status, how sick are they, how frail are they, what is their functional status, and if they have a caregiver. In performing the role of weekend coordinator, Yvonne has made herself an invaluable member of the interdisciplinary care team. She identifies issues before they become problems. Yvonne is admired by her coworkers and respected by the HBC team, for her knowledge and dedication to our patients and staff.
