I sincerely believe that I turned the corner physically and psychologically during his 12-hour night shift because of his superb care.
My husband and I were in a terrifying head-on collision when a car unexpectedly entered our lane. Our car’s safety features (deployed airbags and seatbelts) helped to save our lives but left me with a crushed sternum, broken rib, and cuts and bruises. I was in almost unbearable pain when I moved and was quite traumatized by the accident.
When we were transferred from the Emergency Department to 2 South, Zach Foster provided exemplary nursing care to me. I think Zach sensed my emotionally fragile state and chatted with me about his time in the Army as a medic and how the military selected him for nursing school. Early on, I knew that I was in the best of hands when I asked him a question and he cited a current clinical research article and clearly answered my question. He, over and over, made sure that I was completely comfortable and got my pain under excellent control. I wasn’t very hungry, but he made sure that I stayed well-hydrated. He took extra time to educate me about pain management when I returned home. I sincerely believe that I turned the corner physically and psychologically during his 12-hour night shift because of his superb care.
Doctors Hospital is fortunate indeed to have a nurse like Zach, who exemplifies clinical expertise coupled with kindness, compassion, and integrity. It is an honor to have the opportunity to nominate him for a DAISY Award. His kindness and professionalism touched my heart and I will never be the same.
