At all times when Zach was present, my mom was at ease, and my mom was rarely at ease during her stay.
For two weeks, my mom was a patient at Kaiser Baldwin Park. This was a very traumatic time for my sisters and me, and mom, too, as we watched her go in and out of surgery multiple times, had caregivers move in and out of her room throughout the day and night, and suffered restless and sleepless nights. To say we were riding an emotional roller-coaster would be appropriate for all of us, mom included. If there was one saving grace throughout our mom’s stay, a shining beacon of light in our time of darkness, it came from a nurse CCU nurse named Zachary Uniza. His care and compassion, from our perspective, was unrivaled. At all times when Zach was present, my mom was at ease, and my mom was rarely at ease during her stay. Zach expressed a deep concern for mom and always knew what she needed. Of great importance was his realization she had to move to positions other than lying prone. Zach gently guided mom to stand and sit, positions somewhat foreign to her post-surgery. Zach knew these movements were important to her circulation, muscle movement, and psychological well-being. Mom was confident in Zach’s understanding of her needs. We’re thankful for his considerate care. Zach is a model for all caregivers to emulate or at least think of when their desire to care for patients ebbs into nothing more than a mere routine. Please know that you have a superstar on your team, and his name is Zach. We will all remember how he cared for our mom long after she returns to good health. He treated mom like a person, not a patient.
