Remarkably, Zahra did not stop at just planning; she personally found a housekeeping service, made the arrangements, and even covered the costs from her own pocket.
As a Magnet Director, I have the privilege of hearing countless stories of the incredible work nurses and leaders do, often unnoticed but deeply impactful. Among those stories, one stands out, revealing the extraordinary care provided by a leader whose dedication knows no bounds. This story is about Zahra Alabbas, a leader whose commitment to the well-being of her pediatric patients and their families goes far beyond her responsibilities.

Zahra not only manages her demanding workload, balancing leadership and administrative tasks, but she also goes the extra mile to ensure that each patient and their parents are cared for physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Her practice is one of deep, empathetic care that touches the lives of many.

One story, in particular, touched my heart. It involves a young patient who comes to the pediatric oncology day care (PODC) unit every week for chemotherapy, accompanied by her mother. Zahra always takes the time to connect with her patients and their families, and this family was no different. During one of their regular conversations, Zahra noticed that the girl's mother seemed utterly exhausted—physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

While she knew the nursing staff had done the necessary referrals for social services, Zahra felt that this mother needed more support. Determined to make a difference, Zahra took it upon herself to find a solution. She thought about what could truly ease the burden of this mother, who was tirelessly supporting her daughter through her treatments. Zahra decided to arrange for a housekeeper to visit their home twice a week to help the mother with household tasks—something that would give her the rest she so clearly needed.

Remarkably, Zahra did not stop at just planning; she personally found a housekeeping service, made the arrangements, and even covered the costs from her own pocket. This selfless act exemplifies what it means to be a true leader in healthcare, someone who sees beyond the immediate medical needs and cares deeply for the entire well-being of the patient and their family. Zahra’s actions provided not just practical help, but also hope and relief to a mother in need during an incredibly difficult time.

Zahra’s compassion, empathy, and dedication embody the spirit of extraordinary patient care. She is a leader who sacrifices her own time and resources to ensure others are cared for, and her actions serve as an inspiring example to all of us. Zahra’s story deserves to be shared, as she is truly a shining example of what it means to lead with heart.
