When I received a new patient on my unit, I had a consult regarding DCF concerns for the patient's children. I learned the ED case manager, Zara, had already spent the morning helping the kids who had found themselves in a bad living situation with a parent who wasn't caring for them. Zara listened to them and helped the family find a safe relative to stay with. She assessed the situation and made the DCF report herself. Zara showed great compassion and care for the lives that came to our hospital. She listened to the kids who were alone and afraid, and she assured them that they would be taken care of. Zara went above and beyond to take the time to make sure the children felt heard and that their needs were met. I am so grateful to have Zara on my team because she cares about the people who are asking for help, even if their voices are the smallest in the room.
