She reminded all of us of the power of presence, of going above and beyond, and of showing up when it matters most. Zoe’s compassion, commitment, and humanity shine through in everything she does
During an emotionally challenging case, Zoe Pudela, BSN, RN demonstrated the kind of compassion, commitment, and humanity that defines what it means to be a nurse—and what it means to truly care for the whole patient and their family during life’s most vulnerable moments. Being an ICU nurse is not easy. We see the worst of the worst—families on their hardest days, situations with unimaginable outcomes, and patients whose stories often end far too soon. But even in the face of all that, Zoe continues to show up with empathy, strength, and heart.

The patient was admitted following a cardiac arrest and remained critically ill with a poor prognosis. Zoe cared for this patient over the course of three days, not only managing complex medical needs but also forming a deep and meaningful connection with both the patient and his family. She approached each shift with grace, taking time to comfort, to advocate, and to be present. In a situation where emotions ran high and uncertainty loomed, Zoe was a steady, compassionate force.

After Zoe finished her shifts, the patient’s condition continued to decline, and in the days that followed, the family made the incredibly selfless decision to pursue organ donation. As preparations began, the patient’s mother was asked if there were any nurses she remembered. Without hesitation, she mentioned Zoe by name. I reached out to Zoe the night before this patient was supposed to donate, and in an incredible act of heart and selflessness, Zoe and her family drove overnight from New York City straight to the doors of LCH. She arrived just in time to support the family during their most difficult moments and to honor the life of a child who had touched so many in such a short time.

This act also provided a sense of closure, not only to the family but to Zoe as well. As ICU nurses, we often don’t get the closure we need in these emotionally intense situations. Being able to offer this final support and honor the patient’s legacy was an incredible gift for both the family and Zoe, allowing her to find peace in the completion of this chapter. Zoe’s selfless act of returning to the bedside brought a deep sense of comfort, not only to the family but also to the staff who witnessed her unwavering commitment.

She reminded all of us of the power of presence, of going above and beyond, and of showing up when it matters most. Zoe’s compassion, commitment, and humanity shine through in everything she does. Her actions during this time were extraordinary, but to those of us who work alongside her, they simply reflect the nurse and person she is every single day.
