After a long shift, Zoie Maynard and I were walking off our unit to get to the elevator. We noticed an elderly visitor of one of our patients. He was looking for the vending machine. Instead of pointing him in the right direction, Zoie walked him all the way down the hall, in the opposite direction. She was in no hurry and chatted with him as he walked slowly down the hallway.

After the day we had, no one would have blamed her for pointing him in the right direction and continuing to the time clock, but she refuses to allow patients or their family members to feel as though they are a burden. She treats family members as though they are her own and makes sure they are cared for. I hope to be such a genuine compassionate nurse!
