Zuleyka also stayed two hours past her shift to help my friend. She did not want her to feel alone.
I helped a friend get to the hospital to deliver her 5th baby. Zuleyka admitted her while I checked in. My friend was struggling financially and with the baby’s father. Zuleyka spoke Spanish with her to understand her situation. Zuleyka also stayed two hours past her shift to help my friend. She did not want her to feel alone. Both Zuleyka and I wanted to record and verify her wishes for the birth and postpartum care. We were doing our best to ensure she and her healthy baby girl had an advocate.
A few hours after the birth, my friend asked for some time to bond with the baby. It was a polite way of saying go home. I appreciated that she could ask me so gracefully. I also wrote down everything Zuleyka and I discussed so my friend could show notes to the social worker. I felt comfortable leaving my friend at the hospital. The doctor and team spoke Spanish with her, and the birth was very safe and pleasant. The birth team was very caring and worked well together. After the 3rd time, Zuleyka checked on my friend when she was supposed to be on break. I told her I was nominating her for a DAISY. She was delighted because she organizes mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. Sometimes DAISY gives grants for supplies. Besides having a lovely attitude, Zuleyka went above and beyond to make sure my friend had a voice. It was deeply moving to see someone care that much. Thank you.
