I brought my son for the first time to the emergency room as a desperate attempt to save his life. After being treated unsuccessfully for pneumonia at our local hospital, I was sure he was going to die. My son has Sturge-Weber Syndrome a very rare disease that is associated with a port wine stain on his face along with other disfiguring anomalies. I was used to healthcare workers in the past only seeing his appearance and treating him like he was not a human being. When we came into the ED I was alone and very afraid. Josie was our nurse and for the first time a healthcare worker looked past his appearance and treated him professionally and with compassion. Within minutes she alerted all of the necessary people to help my son. It was decided he needed to be intubated and with his physical anomalies I was always told this was impossible. Within the hour my son was taken to the OR and successfully intubated and on life saving oxygen and medication. In my desperate state of mind, I left all of my personal belongings with Josie in the ED. When we got to his room, there were all of my things, neatly piled on my son's wheelchair. The next day, Josie as well as three other ED nurses, all came to our room to check on us. I had no family or friends in the area and all of their support was invaluable to me. One week later, my son went into respiratory arrest followed by a cardiac arrest. I was alone, scared, and devastated. People kept asking me if they could call someone to be with me and I told them I have no one. Immediately my thoughts went to Josie as her visits had become daily. They called her from the ED to come and support me through the most difficult time of my life. I don't know what I would have done without her. Miraculously, my son survived after a three hour long code. Josie continued to visit us in every ICU we were in. I call her my son's guardian angel because I believe she saved my son's life twice. We are scheduled to be discharged on September 22 after being here since August 5. We have made a lifelong friend. Josie will always be part of our family now. I am eternally grateful for her support and friendship during the most difficult time of my life. I don't feel alone any more. She is a very special, caring, professional nurse that you should be proud to say is an outstanding example of what a nurse should be.
