Marie is always caring and going the extra mile for her patients. We recently admitted a lady that had a growth on her lower leg that was pretty large. The lady was very self conscious of this sore and apprehensive about letting anyone see the growth. The patient also had a family situation where her daughter was battling breast cancer for the past year and she had been caring for her grandchildren. Due to the condition of her daughter, she did not tell anyone about the growth on her leg and did not seek any medical attention. Finally, she did go to a family doctor and the doctor sent her over for immediate admission. After surgery, it was found that the growth on the leg was Stage IV cancer and the lady was terminal. Marie bonded with this family and went above her duty to make them feel comfortable. She was respectful of how the lady felt about the growth on her leg and was very concerned about maintaining her dignity. The family consistently praised Marie's care of the patient. Dr. Patel even offered for Marie to scrub and watch the surgery. After the patient arrived back to the floor and the family had been told of the terminal diagnosis, Marie cried with the family and generally help console the family. She allowed the patient and her husband to have time alone. The family had a conference with Dr. Patel later that afternoon in which Marie was at bedside and offered continuing family support. She definitely is a great example of what a St. Mary's nurse represents caring and compassionate!
