Recently we admitted a patient to the New Beginnings who suffered a fetal demise prior to admission. During her extended stay, Ava cared for this patient and showed much compassion. She noticed that the patient had no shoes and only dirty shorts and a t-shirt to wear to the funeral home to see her baby whenever she would be discharged. In addition to providing this patient with the utmost compassionate care and grief support, Ava took it upon herself to go to Belk and purchase her some clothes. She purchased this patient a pretty black and white dress, shoes, and underwear. She also bought her some soft PJs to wear while still in the hospital. After the patient had showered, Ava enlisted the help of a coworker to braid her hair. When the patient put on the new outfit, her boyfriend told her how pretty she looked. The patient told one of the nurses that if everyone would be as nice as the nurses in our hospital, the world would be a better place to live. Ava is a team player on our unit, always willing to help others, often offering to work extra shifts when we are in need. During leader rounding, she is always recognized by her patients.
