Anthony exemplifies the values of JPS by providing the best care possible through utilizing his extensive emergency nursing experience coupled with compassionate and respectful care. Anthony serves as not only a formal leader as Patient Placement Coordinator, but also as an informal leader by serving as a consistent resource of knowledge, support and encouragement to staff.
Anthony provides the best care possible to all patients and families. His 12 years of emergency nursing experience including six years of flight nurse experience make him the go to resource for education and guidance. He is a resource not only to nursing staff, but to all staff. Anthony has been a licensed paramedic for 15 years, and was an EMT for two years prior to that. This gives him a unique perspective on patient care having worked in every aspect of our patient's journey, including their care prior to arrival at the hospital.
Recently a code blue call came over the stat radio for a patient on the loading docks at our hospital. Anthony responded to the call along with other staff per protocol. The loading docks are across the street from the emergency department and Anthony arrived on scene first. He immediately checked for a pulse and did not find one, and recognized that the patient was not breathing. Anthony began chest compressions and continued them until other staff arrived. As other nurses and physicians arrived the scene became somewhat chaotic. Anthony's experience as a paramedic and flight nurse came to use as he stayed calm and composed throughout the ordeal to provide structural organization to a high stress situation. He facilitated an efficient transfer of the patient to the emergency room by stretcher with the help of other staff all while continuing to ensure all ACLS protocols were being met. Anthony arrived with the patient to the ER and stayed with the patient throughout the 30 minute resuscitation effort working with the primary RN and physicians.
The patient survived and was transported to ICU in stable condition. If not for Anthony's quick response, expert assessment and immediate recognition of an emergent situation with the appropriate implementations this patient would likely have not survived.
This is just one of many examples of how Anthony's knowledge and experience along with his ability to stay calm and lead during high stress situations lead to the best possible outcomes for patients. Simply put, Anthony is the nurse everyone wants around when something goes bad!
