An experienced nurse possesses many attributes that enhance her interactions with patients. Skills and knowledge lead to trust by those the nurse interacts with. Empathy and understanding promotes the building of relationships. One of the challenges of being a nurse in the outpatient setting of an oncology facility is the ability to recognize what it is the patient needs and to be able to meet their need within a limited time frame.
Heather Wypij met and exceeded my expectation for care during our brief encounter while I was a new patient in the gynecology center at Roswell Park. I met Heather within a couple of hours of receiving a diagnosis of cancer. My visit progressed quickly and consent for surgery was signed within a short period of time. I was devastated from the news. My mind was full of thoughts about how I would relay the news to my children. I was grieving the acute loss of my health that resulted from the knowledge of my diagnosis. During this time Heather was able to connect with me and my husband. She made herself available to answer any questions we might have and offered to connect us with supportive services. She was positive and professional in all of her interactions. Most of all, Heather was empathetic. She showed her support and understanding by her quiet presence as I attempted to still the chaos I was feeling in my head and heart. It was that silent presence that had the greatest impact on me. The gift she shared is something I will always remember and appreciate.
