My ex-husband and I had to bring our ten-year-old son for assessment after finding a suicidal letter from school. We had never been through anything like this before and we were terrified. It was a terrible situation and probably the worst day of my life as a mother. When we arrived, we were so relieved to have Betsy as our nurse. She treated the matter seriously and compassionately. She spoke to my son in a way that made him open up and feel comfortable while still doing all of the things I know she has to do for her job. She was competent and knowledgeable but demonstrated a level of empathy that we truly needed that night. My ex even remarked that "if I had known that it would be this good, we could have come sooner." She asked all of the right questions and never once made any of us feel uncomfortable for being there. As a nurse myself, I work with lots of other truly excellent nurses and almost even expect that from our profession, but Betsy really went above and beyond and I am grateful for that, especially as a mom on a devastating night, with a terrified son.
