Shawn recently cared for a patient who was having anxiety and depression from the recent shooting in Gilroy. The patient was with his 7-year-old at the event and was next to the shooter. Shawn was caring, used excellent communication skills to express genuine care and empathy to the member. The patient was not ready to repeat his story again and didn't want to speak about the incident anymore. Shawn said, "I will look at the nurse's call notes earlier so I can help you." After Shawn read the previous call notes she said, "Oh, I wish I was there so I can just hold you." "I can hear your pain." After Shawn booked a TAV she said, "I wish I could do more".
Shawn remained professional, compassionate, aware of her own feelings and was able to manage her own stress to assist with the needs of this patient.
