Ruth was my nurse while staying at the Portland VA. She was in charge of me during the day shift. I was to be traveling from Portland to Madras upon my release. I did not have a proper bra for my travel. The left breast was removed during my due to cancer.
Ruth had gone to the "PX" (gift shop) to purchase me a sports bra from her own personnel money. The clerk helped her to find a bra, not finding a big enough one. She made sure I had all the supplies needed to take care of me during post-op. Plastic wrap to wrap my chest when showering, sterile gauze pads, safety pins to secure my drain tubes, cups to measure the output from my flow tubes - taught me how to empty drains, placement of gauze, recording amount of output from drains. How to roll the drains so they would create suction.
I was really unsure of how I would do this myself - "scared" - with her teaching I found I could do this! She left answering all my questions; I really needed this training session.
I have done a good job draining these units. Thank you so much for all she did for me. A very happy Vet!
