There was a baby in the NICU with an abnormal heartbeat and was being worked up by the pediatrician. Alana's skill set of reading EKGs and appreciating different rhythms saved this baby. She was watching our central monitor most of the day. At about 2:00 pm, she caught a run of Vtach, which was actually Torsade de Pointes!!! I have never seen this in a baby. Thankfully the run only lasted about 10 seconds and the baby remained stable. But Alana's ability to interpret the EKG got the ball rolling faster regarding cardiology and transport to Norton Children's Hospital. We were able to have everything ready in case the baby went into sustained Vtach. The seconds saved in preparation would have saved this baby's life. The Chief of Peds Cardiology commended Alana's skill and recognized that most of us in the NICU would not have recognized it that quickly. Alana is a delight to work with and I have enjoyed watching her become a skilled and seasoned NICU nurse. We are blessed to have her, and I believe this baby is safe and healthy today because of Alana!
