I witnessed Sharon go above and beyond while taking care of one of her many patients this day. It was a Saturday evening and at the end of her shift, and her patient had a severely distended abdomen and was in tremendous discomfort. Sharon reached out to the patient's hospitalist who was, fortunately, able to increase the patient's pain medication to bring him some comfort but said that he was unable to contact the Interventional Radiologist that day.
Sharon then took it upon herself to call Radiology directly to see if anything could be done. The patient was in so much discomfort and tears. Sharon was eventually able to facilitate the necessary arrangements for him to have his procedure done the next morning rather than wait any longer. Instead of merely giving the report to the next nurse and leaving for the day, I believe that she went above and beyond what most nurses would do in order for her patient to receive the care he deserves.
The next morning 10,000 ml of fluid was drained from his abdomen which caused him such great relief. The patient and his wife would not stop thanking Sharon for her care and compassion. She does all of this while never losing the bright smile on her face. I believe the impact she made on him and his wife is something that we can all learn from.
