My son was airlifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital. Over the weekend, our nurse, Kristen, was amazing. She was so sweet and thoughtful with us and with her care of my son. A few examples: I inquired about coffee. She said she would go see if any had been made and would start some if not. I got in the shower and when I got out, I saw where she had left a cup of coffee with creamer and sugar on the side and a note saying she wanted to be sure I got some.
This weekend had been filled with a lot of uncertainty with what the prognosis was for my son. She was so encouraging and empathetic. She told us about how her son had gotten sick and they didn't know what was going on. That she understood how we felt. She was in the room when we got the answers we were looking for and they weren't the greatest. We were crying and when the doctor left she came up to us and said, "I know this was horrible news and this is the worst day of your life, but I have seen kids with brain injury on top of brain injury walk out of this hospital with no problems. He will be fine. He will walk out of here."
When they moved my son, she followed us and stayed with us until the end of her shift. At one point, he opened his eyes for the first time since Friday and stretched out his arms. We weren't sure if he was having a seizure so she watched him while we were talking to him. Then, he cooed at us and kept looking at us as we talked. She turned away for a second and said, "That's the first time I've cried in front of the family." When she was leaving for the day, she told us she would be praying for us on her way home and crying over us. She is absolutely wonderful. She needs to be recognized for her wonderful heart.
