On Saturday AM Marwin was in charge at HMC when a patient was on their way to deliver a full-term baby. They were near HMC when she realized she would not make it to her facility. They stopped at HMC Emergency Department where they were met by a calm and competent staff directed by the charge nurse.
The mom was roomed, and the supplies were readied. The patient and father of the baby were made to feel they were in the best hands possible. The baby was delivered without incident, Marwin reached out to the supervisor who went to the gift shop and got a rose and a blanket for the mom and baby. Marwin also ensured the newborn and mom had a bonding period with skin to skin contact while waiting for the transfer vehicle.
The staff noted the documentation tools did not function properly within the EMR and a ticket was opened and Marwin escalated the issue to the appropriate people to ensure all the documentation was able to be completed properly prior to transfer. The ability to document also includes the ability to print a bracelet for the infant. He was able to direct staff to create a downtime bracelet for the newborn.
It is stressful in the Community Emergency Department setting to participate in the delivery of a baby due to our lack of obstetrics. Marwin's calm and competent demeanor is essential to maintaining calm in the chaos.

There are some nurses you meet during your career who just shine brighter than others. Marwin Fernandez is one of those nurses.
The atmosphere in the ER can be intense and demanding even on the best day. We mentally prepare ourselves for what may wait on the other side of the ER door every day. When you see Marwin in the parking lot or walking in for his shift, you know that no matter what the day may hand you, it is going to be okay.
Marwin is unflappable. He can hit as many curveballs as you can pitch. As a nurse, you know that Marwin will be there to have your back, and he will do it with a genuine and sincere heart. He is always there to pitch in and help, or to lend an ear when things get tough.
He makes this ER feel like a family. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in his field. He inspires us all to be the best we can be. When I grow up... I want to be like Marwin!
