Justin is an integral part of our ICU team. Not only is he a great nurse leader, but he is also a great team player and will do anything for his staff. He is helping out bedside staff regularly; cleaning, turning, placing IVs, gathering supplies, etc. Nothing is "below" Justin and that is what makes him a fantastic leader. He leads by example and pushes his staff to ultimately do their best. He takes pride in educating about critical care and gives new fellows "mock situations" to increase their knowledge and decrease their nerves to better prepare them for the unpredictable nature of the unit. He is a great resource for information and his door is always open- literally. Because of this, I have rarely seen Justin leave remotely on-time and is still there helping out even when a twelve-hour shift is about to come to an end.

He is passionate about the quality metrics and the overall wellbeing of our patients. In efforts to decrease CLABSI, Justin introduced "arrow catheters" to the unit to trial, an extended dwell catheter in efforts to decrease central line placement. Justin will stay hours past shift to help place these IVs under ultrasound in order to help prevent central lines from being placed. He rounds numerous times throughout the day on removing foley catheters to decrease CAUTIs and advocates for patients when receiving push back from providers.

Overall, Justin cares about his staff. In a unit full of ongoing stress and chaos, Justin is constantly trying to boost staff morale and keep staff motivated. Whether it is ordering breakfast, bringing in donuts, getting a cake delivered, or hiring a masseuse from Massage Envy, there is no limit for Justin to help create a safe and healthy environment. He acknowledges the war-like setting we often combat, recognizes the emotional and physical exhaustion ICU staff is faced with, and understands what it takes to be the best bedside nurse one can be. Most importantly, Justin has faith in us as a unit and because of Justin's leadership, we are able to provide the care we do to the sickest patients in the health system.
