We had a patient who had right shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff. He had a Penicillin allergy that he failed to tell staff prior to surgery and was given Ancef. The patient had an allergic reaction to the medication and was admitted to ICU.
On Wednesday, the patient's alarm was beeping for high blood pressure. I went into his room to check on him and he was in tears. When I asked him what was wrong, he stated, "some kind soul paid $150 for this machine (his ice man machine) so I could take it home with me." He then went on to say, "There is no way I could pay for this machine because I will be out of work for 12 weeks and I am trying to get disability."
The kind soul who paid for his machine was his nurse, Irina Kaplun. Irina has a kind heart, and she cares deeply for her patients.
