Susan is exactly the type of nurse that we should all strive to be. She is kind, caring, considerate and has the patient and family well-being as her number one goal. She goes above and beyond. We had a patient in the emergency room yesterday and the doctor requested St. Thomas come to talk to the family about discharge home with St. Thomas Hospice. The patient had family and resources set up at home already. St. Thomas did not have a nurse to see the patient last night and requested that the patient be admitted to the observation unit. The family did not want this and wanted to take the patient home. Susan spoke with the ED doctor and they were able to give her something for pain to go home on until St. Thomas would be able to admit her the next day. Susan is a patient and family advocate and she has shown this on numerous occasions. It would have been easy for her to convince the family to stay in the hospital in observation overnight to arrange a nurse visit the next day, but she thinks out of the box and she thought of another way to honor the wishes of the family and discharge the patient. She is a perfect example of a shining star. She is an amazing nurse and her compassion is impeccable.
