It has been awhile since I had the need to stay once again at the VA Hosp. In March I had yet another kidney procedure, a left ureteral stone, big ones. There were 3 in the urethra blocking movement, a large one still in the kidney.
I was in a great deal of pain the people in the ER saw this and shortly I was in a room. They did their best to make me comfortable until the doctor arrived. She advised I stay the night and have the procedure around 12:00 noon. If I were to go home, I would only return later in more pain. She was right. About 1:00 AM that night, the pain really started again.
Then my angel came into my life, the night nurse was Beth Higgins. I made it hard on her. As being in pain, I lost it for a while. I dumped my dinner, that's how bad it was. I must have driven that poor child crazy with my constant calls. Never the less, she came in with that beautiful smile which almost worked but the medications she gave me did the trick. It did take a while, but she hung in there and got it done. I was able to sleep about an hour before shift change. Then the next shift took over, more medications and then the procedure. This was my third one, it still hurt.
My angel was there for me. God bless Beth. You tell her she will always be in our hearts. She was calm, professional, competent, and knew her stuff. Above all, she was sincere in her caring. It was as if God had placed her here to care for me. She made my stay bearable as did a host of others, but she was the best by far.
The hospital has come a long, long, way, the people on staff displayed a caring I have not seen since my time in Nam, really great. Thank you and God Bless.
