Nursing informatics is defined as the intersection of caring and technology. A team of clinicians led by a nurse that makes a difference every day in the lives of people is the Knowledge and Terminology Team. Nurses and other clinicians on the Knowledge and Terminology Team have a passion for their work, fueled by over 300 years of clinical expertise in adult and pediatrics, emergency medicine, community and home health, intensive care, organ transplant, oncology, cardiology, obstetrics, gastroenterology, neurology, behavior health, and terminology, to name a few. Even though these nurses are not at the bedside of patients as their primary employment, they are still working to fulfill their team's vision to improve health outcomes for a group of individuals, which potentially encompasses the breadth of the populations served by our Cerner clients.
A key contribution this team makes is towards the imperative of 'One Record, One Plan, One Bill.' Standing on the shoulders of distinguished IT developers who have created a data platform, ontology tools, analytics tools, and coded logic, this team clinically defines quality measure requirements and provides the value sets that build the bridge between the data and its integration. Interoperability is at the core of this imperative, and without the content provided by this team, there would be gaps in the standardized data exchange coming from disparate sources and the utilization of the integrated data in patient-centric records, quality measure algorithms, analytics, and research.
The sheer volume of the content the team has created is a marvel, and as more clients onboard, the complexity of the work increases. The Knowledge and Terminology Team continues to grow in their knowledge and expertise to succeed in their mission to contribute to the systemic improvement of health care delivery and the health of communities by creating data-driven, scalable solutions that can predict and improve the quality, delivery, and cost of health care. The team's strategy is to:
Provide organizations with a comprehensive set of data in near real-time about the populations they serve
Deliver a broad set of population health management solutions
Allow organizations to customize the platform and solutions to fit the unique needs of the community, delivery network and served populations
Provide actionable information to members, caregivers and administrators in the context of what they do every day, whether that is to a person on their smartphone or to a clinician working inside their EMR
Key to the success of the team is the leadership provided by Angie Glotstein. She has been at the helm of the Knowledge and Terminology Team since its inception five years ago and has grown the culture of the team to embrace these key values, as defined by Angie in a presentation she gave at a population health boot camp.
Think Critically
Use your clinical thinking to question things
Stretch beyond the ask because you are the expert
Understand how what you are doing impacts the solution
Own what you are working on
Our products are a result of each member of our team
Come prepared to challenge, discuss and collaborate
Realize that design is not linear
Our process should be flexible and can be rewritten as needed
Celebrate getting better in this area every day
In Angie's office is a motto on the wall that mirrors her leadership style:
If you work really hard, and you're kind, amazing things will happen.
At the core, Angie is a hard worker, continuing to grow her skills and knowledge to lead with excellence, while modeling being kind every day, which bolsters leadership, collaboration, and empathy in her team members as they work together with each other, and with internal and external clients. What this team has accomplished is a credit to her leadership.
