Just 12 weeks ago, the Nursing Leaders of Memorial Hospital West met to take on a new challenge and healthcare crisis. After reading about China and Italy, it was now our turn to battle the novel virus COVID. Memorial Hospital West, part of the large, populated South Florida community, planned, organized and opened the COVID unit in an area that had to be converted to negative pressure, add furniture to the empty rooms, and attempt to schedule staff for patient care without any budgeted or assigned staff! The Leaders, all in one breath said one word. "Melissa". Melissa was the top nurse to serve/continue to serve as Interim Nurse Manager for the first COVID Unit. Melissa took on the challenge and "overnight" established a high functioning, caring, voluntary Nursing Staff, Support Staff, and Spiritual Staff. Staff wanted to work with Melissa and care for the most fragile population of patients battling COVID, separated from their loved ones, isolated and alone. Melissa knows every patient. She speaks to every family. She teaches every staff member safe infection control protection for themselves and their patients. Melissa motivates others to do their best and do it with a gracious heart. Melissa is often heard saying, "I love my job and the opportunity to constantly help others". Melissa's role model for her Nursing Career as always been her Aunt. Melissa learned a lot from her aunt. She learned things that have made Melissa a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
