Melody Bonnell on 3 North saved the day on Tuesday June 9th! At about 4:50pm, one of our physicians brought down close to 15 prescriptions for a patient that was being discharged that evening and needed her prescriptions filled before they could discharge her, for compliance and situational reasons. Even though we knew it couldn't be done before 5:00 (when the pharmacy closes) we agreed to fill them. The patient had insurance and the doctor thought the patient wouldn't have any copays because of the type of insurance she had. So as I am getting them ready I see she does have a small copay for each prescription, and I called the floor to make sure the patient had some money, debit/credit card, or a check with her. Melody said she would go ask the patient for me, she came back to the phone and said the patient didn't have any money and didn't have any family that could help. Melody asked what could we do, and unfortunately our hands were tied, we can't waiver copays or have the hospital's indigent med program cover them so without hesitation Melody said, "Just fill them, she needs them, and she can't leave without them. I will figure something out." A few minutes later she came downstairs and told me she was going to just pay for them. She used her debit card and paid the woman's copays!
This is amazing! In the pharmacy we have seen situations like this quite a few times. There have been times I have paid a small copay, like a dollar or so. But I've never had any staff pay this much for a patient's prescriptions before! I just want everyone to know how special this situation was, and how gracious Melody was!
Thank you soooo much Melody!
