I nominate Patricia O'Neal for the DAISY award for the continual commitment to patient safety and satisfaction. Through my senior preceptorship in the NICU I have had the opportunity to work alongside Patricia and to directly observe her caring approach to babies and their families. I am constantly impressed by the feedback from families. The most common phrases I've heard from patients include "That's so important - how has no one told us that yet?" and "Thank you."
Although there are many examples, the time that's sticks out to me the most is the day Patricia cared for a 37 week infant with an unexpected diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Both parents appeared hesitant when holding and caring for their baby. Patricia not only listened to the parent's requests to hold and breastfeed, but recognized the opportunity to educate them about long term care and communication.
Patricia uses her previous experience to educate families about potential complications to prevent common misconceptions and frustration. Not only does she commit to satisfying patient needs, but Patricia is continually offering to help other nurses in the ICN. She is the golden example of compassion and reliability in her everyday actions and has taught me how a truly dedicated nurse can make a world of difference.
