My 89-year old father was moved to 3-West after treatment for a total colectomy after profuse bleeding over three days. It was hectic there due to the influx of patients being transferred because of a hurricane hitting the GA coast. When Becky arrived for the 7P-7A shift Saturday, he was still getting settled and lots of things had been missed. Within the first 15 minutes of her arrival in his room she had identified and corrected several things that had been overlooked during his transition from the ICU. He was confused and disoriented. She spoke to him and to us with extreme kindness and compassion while working to change his O2 tubing to something more comfortable, changing a leaking ostomy bag, getting GI suction working properly, and connecting the circulation pumps on his legs, just to name a few. I stayed with my father overnight and she continued to monitor him very frequently. During one of the brief times I actually was able to fall asleep he removed his NG tube, pulled out two IVs and was well on his way to disturbing the ostomy bag placement. I called and she was immediately in there working feverishly without any negativity. She was extremely kind to me and to him during this time. With the help of Tim, the Charge Nurse, order was restored. I was trained as an LPN many years ago and my husband is an RN. We were overwhelmed with her awareness and eye for detail while maintaining her humor and kindness. Becky certainly made my father's recovery easier for all of us. Her empathy and compassion were so profound that it would have been easy to overlook her phenomenal clinical skills. I hope she's still around if I ever need post-op care.
