When my husband and I stayed on the post partum floor with our newborn baby the first night Ashley was our nurse. She was so good we asked to have her back the second night. Our baby was born with Down syndrome. Many employees would talk to us about it and act as though he was so different from the rest of us. But to us he was a teeny-tiny baby. He was our baby and by thinking of him as a baby and not a diagnosis made the experience over joyful.
Ashley never once referenced the Down syndrome. She continued to help me breastfeed him and even spent 45 minutes with us at one point because she and I were both determined to get him latched on. She was very patient, caring and respectful and she is someone I will never forget. Ashley helped to make our experience at Mercy wonderful and helped us feel like any other parents with a newborn baby, not the parents with a "different" baby. She really went above and beyond her job duties to make us happy. I think the world needs more nurses and people in general like Ashley because it would be a much more peaceful and loving place if it did!
