I am currently working as a Case Manage and recently was involved in a very special case that demonstrates the care and compassion of the entire multidisciplinary team, and mostly, the nurse who took the first step to a positive outcome for a patient that experienced a catastrophic stroke. This story revolves around a music professor and conductor who was admitted from the ED prior to the holidays.
The patient was unresponsive and on a ventilator. During the Christmas Holiday, BMH had the pleasure of having a singing group perform. One of ICU nurses, Tina Knop transferred the patient, vent and all, into a wheelchair and wheeled him to the 1st floor to listen to the singing. The group then came to the ICU and she moved this patient in the hall to listen to the music. This unresponsive patient responded to the music by moving his head toward the sound. After this experience, the pharmacist from the ICU, who has a daughter who is majoring in music, asked if she would come to the hospital to play for this patient. She played Mozart, Vivaldi, and Bach. Within weeks, this patient started to respond and improve. The patient was able to come off the vent and transferred to 5 West where the staff continued to incorporate music within his plan of care. He started to request specific pieces for the staff to play on their cellphones and specific pieces for the pharmacist's daughter, who continued to come to the hospital to play for this patient. Within a few weeks, the patient was transferred to MRU and he continues to improve and the music continues to be incorporated into the plan.
Tina went over and above to utilize music to stimulate the professor's brain and truly helped him to make a full recovery. I spoke with the doctors and they both agree that music had an impact on his recovery. If it wasn't for taking that extra step the outcome perhaps would not be as good. The patient has made a full recovery and has decided to dedicate the fall season of the Amherst Chamber Orchestra to this nurse and to the care and compassion demonstrated by our entire staff.
