While working as a case manager there was a patient who presented to Labor and Delivery with a black eye. The patient was very evasive about how she received the injury. It was difficult to discuss with the patient privately since her boyfriend was present each time I was in the room. Scotty was the nurse caring for the patient. She did have the occasion to question the patient in private to see 1) How she got the black eye, 2) If she was a victim of Domestic Violence and 3) if she was safe.

While it is a care provider’s responsibility to ask these questions, they are not always easy to ask. Scotty did what was right for the patient. On patient care rounds, the patients speak very highly of Scotty, she is often a nurse who “goes above and beyond” in the eyes of her patients and their families.
