I was called to AMCU by Crystal Skulimoski regarding a baby that was in a patient's room. At that time it was unknown if the baby belonged to the male patient, the baby's mother was also present. Crystal was worried about the welfare of the baby; about 10 minutes prior Crystal was standing outside the patient's room and heard a loud noise and a baby crying. When Crystal entered the room the adults were sound asleep and the baby was found on the floor, she had rolled off the patient's bed.
Crystal consoled the baby and attempted to wake the mother; the mother finally woke up and showed no concern for the baby's welfare. Crystal encouraged the mother to take the baby down to the ED for evaluation; the mother refused. Crystal then asked if the baby had eaten and mom said no. Crystal proceeded to take the baby to the Nursing Station where she provided the baby with applesauce and juice; the baby ate it quickly.
At this time Crystal also noticed the baby had a soiled diaper. When she returned the baby to the room she told mom that she should take the baby to get more food and that she needed to be changed and put in unsoiled clothing. The mom stated that she didn't have any of that stuff and went back to sleep.
Crystal asked if anyone had clothes for an infant; one of her co-workers Maria Cressman stated she had some new clothes for her baby that she had just purchased. Maria told Crystal that she could go to her car and use those clothes for the baby.
Crystal proceeded to go to the ED to get a package of diapers and wipes for the baby and then went to Maria's car to get the clothes. Crystal proceeded to clean the baby up, change her diaper, and dress the baby in the clothes that Maria provided. Crystal also went to the cafeteria to get additional food for the baby; she purchased this food with her own money and fed the baby.
Crystal and her co-workers went above and beyond to care, not only for this patient, but for the baby that was in the patient's room. She treated this baby with loving kindness and provided necessary care that was not being provided by the parents.
