My father was a patient at Winter Haven Hospital for over a year until he passed. After my father suffered a heart attack, lung collapse, kidney failure, septic shock and life support, he was transferred to MICU. Deshawn, who is normally in SICU, had been transferred for the night and became my dad's nurse.
He was so sick, hallucinating and not acting right. Our family was exhausted after staying with him constantly from Thursday to the particular Sunday night. Deshawn took over his care and was unable to calm him down during a lavender bath (which she called her ultimate calming method for agitated patients.) She put in a request for a procedure to reexamine the surgical site. On Monday morning, my dad was sent for a procedure and it was discovered that he had a leak in his abdomen. He went back into emergency surgery and came out with an ileostomy, was put on a vent and life support. He then became septic. Had it not been for Deshawn our dad would have died that week.
After a regression in 2017, we had the good luck of having Deshawn again in 2018. In January, she went out of her way to help my father celebrate my mother's birthday from his hospital bed. She brought him a real shirt (which we hadn't seen him in for months), his favorite cologne, so he would smell like himself instead of the ICU, flowers, and a cake. She is wonderful at patient care and my dad called her his angel. She will always be our angel and Winter Haven Hospital is lucky to have her.
