The idea of staying at a hospital for any length of time is an unpleasant thought for many especially elderly people and their loved ones. Our initial response was no exception when our dad age 87 was admitted to ER with a severe back pain that subsequently led to a spinal cord surgery and a week stay at St. Mary's Hospital early this year. Our whole family was extremely concerned not only because of his health condition but more so his inability to communicate with healthcare providers while staying at the hospital because he barely speaks any English.
Mary was the dayshift nurse assigned to our dad and one of the few nurses who speak Chinese so she was able to communicate with our dad. A big relief when we learned about that. Each morning we were greeted with Mary's friendly smiles. She would ensure that dad was well cared for from medication dispenses, meal preference to bedding changes during her shift. In addition, Mary took extra efforts to make sure the family members stayed there were comfortable by arranging blankets and ordering meals for them.
Mary was very diligent and provided exceptional care not only to the patient,but also the rest of our family during this difficult period. Dad had a speedy recovery and moved to a rehab facility shortly thereafter. Now he is able to walk with his cane without much pain and often speaks of Mary's kindness during his short hospital stay. We are all very grateful and thankful to Mary for her care and compassion - an extraordinary care provider who goes the extra mile to give the best to her patient and loved ones.
