Imelda helped care for a young Honduran woman with an extraordinarily difficult social situation. Her compassion was exemplary and she was able to comfort the patient and make her feel safe. This was written by Dr. Stephen Johs, one of our surgeons. He spoke with me at length describing the story before the nominees were chosen. During the ceremony Dr. Johs explained eloquently why he chose Imelda for this award. He spoke of overhearing Imelda with the patient and of being so impressed by her ability to be compassionate and caring. This woman was spanish speaking only, seeking asylum in our country from a war torn area and a victim of domestic violence. She was very fearful and anxious. Imelda was able to communicate with her in her own language and give her a person to feel a connection to. This patient did not feel so alone and isolated in foreign place. Imelda made a significant difference in her life with her compassion, caring and presence. Dr. Johs felt that Imelda demonstrated to us all how not to succumb to "compassion fatigue". Healthcare providers sometimes fall victim to becoming numb or disconnected to our patients. Imelda showed us all a shining example of how to keep our caring and compassionate sides intact and flourishing while providing care to our patients.
