During my stay in CICU, Alicia was my nurse on several consecutive days. I observed her work ethic and was genuinely impressed by her passion for the nursing profession and her compassion for taking care of her patients. While caring for me, this nurse mentored a student during my hospital stay. She provided oversight and guidance but gave the student enough space to take initiative in providing my care. This nurse answered questions, offered gentle guidance when needed, and provided positive feedback as appropriate. During the 2-3 days that the student was on duty, I saw her confidence level grow, and I attribute her success to Alicia's mentoring and guidance. She also allowed younger (or less experienced) co-workers an opportunity to perform tasks/processes that seldom occur, giving them an opportunity to sharpen their skills, rather than doing it herself. Her selfless attitude/willingness to share her knowledge speak to the confidence she has in her own skills and her passion for the nursing profession.
