My husband came in on Tuesday with multiple medical issues, but the biggest problem he was facing was lack of sleep and pain from the bed he slept on. He had a bad back and neck issues, along with the medical issues he was in for. The bed he had was broken down. The pump was not working, and he could feel the bar which aggravated his back even more. It was so bad; he would cry just knowing that soon he would be in the bed for the night and be in sheer torture. I had spoken to other nurses about possibly getting a foam egg cushion for the mattress or anything. I was willing to go buy one and throw it out when released. No one was able to help.
On Friday, I was beside myself knowing my husband would not be released for at least another 5 days or longer and watching him go through test after test and no sleep was heart-wrenching. Amber noticed I was distraught. I told her the story of him not being able to get comfortable, and the lack of rest. She immediately went to work seeing if something could be done.
Saturday morning, she informed me that a bed with a pump would be in his room after his 2nd treatment of dialysis. It was! Even though he had multiple tests that day and a lot of negative medical news, it lifted his spirits to be able to lie in a more comfortable bed, and possibly get some much-needed rest! We were then told Tuesday that his life was limited to a couple of weeks to possibly a few months.
Nurses like Amber not only do their job but go beyond just the medical needs. They are a terrific support system for people like me and my husband who are vulnerable and feel helpless in a very difficult situation. We commend her for not only being an excellent nurse but a person who showed compassion when it was most needed. My husband passed away shortly after.
