Twice over the past several weeks, I have needed the assistance of the VAT, and David has been the RN to show up.
On one occasion, I had a teenage patient who needed his port-a-cath accessed, and he was a difficult stick. Accessing his port was time-sensitive during that particular shift, and the VAT was loaded with a list of patients ahead of mine. David selflessly stayed late to come and access my patient's port, without being asked. He was pleasant, professional and had a smile on his face the entire time.
The second time I worked with David, he arrived to place a new IV in a toddler-age boy. Again, David showed up with a smile on his face, and his demeanor was professional and friendly.
I know David's job isn't an easy one, and our patients are usually not excited to see an RN from the VAT, but David has a way of putting the patients (and the bedside RNs!) at ease. I appreciate his stellar bedside manner and easygoing personality. We are lucky to have David at CHLA!
