Vanessa Carless went above and beyond to save the life of a young woman in her unit. Vanessa's keen assessment skills and a deep understanding of the pathology of shock states led her to push for her heroic measures.
Vanessa's background in the cardiac surgery world allowed her to think outside the box when the physician team was rounding on a patient who was clearly in extremis. She was moved by the patient's young child and spouse who were saying their goodbyes as there seemed to be no hope. She knew that the SHH has a cardiogenic shock team and she reached out requesting that the team evaluate possible interventions to save her life.
The Shock Team responded rapidly to assist the physician team and do whatever they could to save the life of a young mother and wife. The patient was started on ECMO, a therapy reserved for the sickest patients. This patient is alive today because of Vanessa's valiant efforts to coordinate care and advocate for this patient. Additionally, Vanessa stayed with the family and ensured that they were informed and guided over to the CSICU. She ensured that the chaplain was there to meet the spiritual needs of the family. She is a hero in the life of this woman's family!
