Gary was assigned to care for a patient in isolation precautions during the COVD pandemic. Because of all of the public health concerns, this Veteran was not able to have his family at his bedside during his time in the critical care unit. Gary has a passion for nursing that shows in his everyday work. The Veteran that he was caring for ended up requiring life support during his critical illness. This was exceedingly difficult for the family who was unable to be at bedside with this patient. Gary was empathetic to the family and patient's needs to see each other and took the time out of his busy shift to use his personal cell phone to FaceTime the family. He made communication a priority despite the multitude of barriers. Despite the amazing care that was provided, this patient did not improve. Gary communicated with the family about this and was able to be with this Veteran when he passed since his family was not able to be there.
This is just one example of how Gary goes above and beyond for his patients on a daily basis. He doesn't make a big deal out of the help he provides to them, is humble in his demeanor and we are lucky to have him in the ICU. In fact, he never would have mentioned how he helped create face to face communication for this Veteran if I had not asked after hearing about it. Gary is a true DAISY Nurse.
